OK... And a VFD is a? - yes, the inverter, AKA Variable Speed Drive (a basic inverter has a fixed frequency output, a VFD can vary 3-phase motor speed by changing the power frequency fed to the motor - e.g. mine runs from 10Hz to 5Hz for very low through to over-speed), bloody good things! I fitted one (admittedly a bit hacked) to my lathe long ago, before I heard about rotary converters - they've come down a lot in price, the Chinese gents offer them for well under a hundred quid and they make lathes quite easy to power at home!
I thought I remembered the name in relation to FF bikes, as ever I was close, but no cigar...
