Well my boss asked me what did i know about this and i told him absolutely nothing but i said i'd find out! so is there anybody here who has done this before or knows the technique? have the right wire and everything ready to go! the boss seems to think that you don't need to use gas which i think is wrong as it doesn't seem to be flux cored wire!!! so anyone know anything on this subject?

A lot of hard surfacing wires are gasless. The ingress of atmosphere helps to harden the alloy. If you use them with gas you could end up with a softer deposit.
The hardest isnt always best, some of the very hard alloys are also brittle. One of the most versatile is the Chromium Carbide type (they contain about 25-35%Cr and 4-6% Carbon. These are not cheap but will last a long time under most circumstances and usually work out better value than the martensitic types (name usually ends in 600)

i don't know the brand mate sorry, he just gave me the roll and said thats the hardfacing wire, but its 1.5mm dimeter! its a 500amp 3 phase welder! its in the fitting shop in work! if it is flux core wouldn't you be able to see the flux in the wire? Its an auger for concrete and it needs 2 inches of hardfacing all the way around the edge. so will i just do parallel runs and space them out and fill in the gaps with a figure of 8 motion like the arc method? or just parallel runs right beside each other?
Usually parallel runs but you really should find out the make and the manufacturers instructions. They are also notoriously toxic so you really should take precautions.

If you run on high volts you will get a thinner flatter bead with more admix from the base metal (not what you want). Low voltages give you a taller squarer bead with less dilution and more build up giving a better alloy and less passes.

Well today i had to get a new roller for wire feed as there was a 1.2 in it! i measured the diamater with a vernier and its 1.6mm so went and got a new roller for the wire feed! then he told me that the liner was only 1.5 and wouldn't believe me that its too small until he seen that it kept getting jammed!!!! so we now have a 1.6mm liner so hhopefully tomorrow we'll actually get going on it! we did manage to get it running for about 15 mins before it jammed up! its definately flux cored you can clearly see the flux on the weld when it cools! i found a serial number on the roll but i can't find where i wrote it down but there is a 600-a6?? not 100% sure on that though but i'll double check it tomorrow!

Muddle, did you see TechnicAl's warning about the wire being toxic? You should have an air-fed mask. Just keeping your head out of the fumes won't cut it.
And did you get the stuff about DC- and parameters - info should come with the wire. If not, phone up the manufacturer and ask. Do it wrong and the job won't be done right.
