Hard steel plate.....ideas to find some.

I'm after some hard steel plate, like ar400 or ar 500.

Circa 40x40cm. Thickness around 15mm-20mm.

Am I likely to find this stuff In a scrappy? No idea what it would normally be used for, but I'll be using it as a target backstop.

Needs to withstand umpteen pills from a variety of rifles, including solid 12gauge slugs.

You could try quarries or someone refurbishing digger buckets.

What are road plates made from? The kind they cover big holes in the road with....they must be pretty beefy?

Road plates are 'normal' grade steel -S275 or S355 grade.

As Wyn says, you would be best finding a digger bucket manufacturer or similar who use Hardox as standard. Are rifle slugs going to go through normal steel plate at 20mm?

i was thinking that.
can you not just double up on thickness on normal grade steel ?

I shoot but just airifles,i would love to see some pics of what proper rifles do to steel plate

I,d love to see a 12g slug go through a bit of 6mm plate.

The problem is after a few rounds have left their marks.......big craters lead to ricochets.....


Hence the hardness.

i know you can get a pellet trap for airifles, basically a backplate with 4 sides,this might work to an extent but any ricochets will come back straight at you
Out of interest,what ranges do you shoot at ?

Various ranges upto 600 yards when hunting etc but for shooting at this plate between 25 yards and 200 yards.

We used to have a nice zeroing place setup in our permission( with a huge earth backstop) , but its now holding livestock........

I got some Hardox 500 discs from KCut in Morecambe http://k-cut.co.uk/ Email John for a quote.
They stand up to 7.62, .270 and .243 rounds without any problem. For pistol calibre rounds from lever action rifles I use 12mm EN8 plate.

We shoot 22.250, .223, .270, .308, and on the odd occasion .338 lapua.

316 (not L) can get to somehwre near 500 Hv when work hardened
