Hanger Doors - DIY or have them Made?

I normally take the end caps off, have a lifting eye screwed in the middle, push the first roller into the track, rest the corner on a round bar, and then just push the door across and into the track

I have done em like that but the last couple have been in tight spots so its been alkward to get the machine near the end of the track,

Its is suprising how easy they are to hang tho.

Thanks for all of your advice. I really appreciate it. I like the idea about hanging the doors in a track. The problem that I have is that my hanger is the middle of three and so there is a hanger either side butting up against mine.

What I ws thinking about was to hang each door on a 3" or 4" box section post that would be 12ft long. 3ft would be sunk into the ground in a lot of concrete! and would be 9ft protruding with a hinge at the top and one at the bottom. The problem In have is that I have no idea whether a 3" or 4" length of box section sunk 3ft into the ground would be capable of holding up a door that is 11ft wide and over 13ft high. We had some similar doors at our previous airfield and they were extremely heavy.

I was thinking that each door would be made of 2" box section steel with a huge diagonal brace going from the bottom of the hinge post up to the upper outer corner of the door. As well as the frame having a top and bottom outer 2" bar, I thought that 2 more horizontal bars inside the frame eg one 4ft from the bottom, then another at 8ft high would do the trick. I've roughly worked out that I need probably 55 metres of 2" box section to make the 2 doors (27 metres per door) and 2 heavy duty 3" or 4" 9ft long posts (Sorry for mixing imp and metric - I learned metric at school but my father always worked in feet and inches!) - Given this amount of steel what would be the rough cost of just the steel? £200, £300? £400?....more?

I have drawn a rough sketch - I'll try and get it scanned tomorrow so that I can upload it.

As mentionned in my previous post, this is the rough drawing that I have knocked up. I am a little concerned for the part of the door that is over 8 ft - It seems to be hanging in mid-air.

Drivewasher - I've just read your post from page 1 - apologies for missing this. I was not trying to do this 'on the cheap' What I was referring to was that if this project is beyond my capability (which I think it is), I'm quite happy to pay the going rate for an experienced welder to do the job. However, I would much rather pay someone directly to do it so that they get the money directly. I imagine that if I go to a Compnay, I will end up paying hundreds more than the going rate in terms of time and materials. I was guessing that there must be lots of experienced welders out there who could make this kind of thing in their sleep and who might like to earn some extra cash for doing so.

Any views on my sketch would be appreciated eg Size of posts, size of frame box section etc.

it is easy enough to get the top bar rolled, so it matches the arc. might cost a few quid extra but worth it. as for opinion on design the second one is better, if you run cross braces diagonally both ways

I'd put a 3rd hinge in there though just to make sure the post takes the weight of it all and put a supporting wheel in the middle one that you could lock in the open position like you'd find on a shopping trolley on both doors or if the ground was uneven a jockey wheel like you would find on a car trailer would work
