as in just hand or on the lathe with a wing nut to tighten the wheels up not just the push type?

If you mean similar to a copper pipe cutter in looks then yes, used one many moons ago, worked ok but it was on brass and wasn't great to match up if you needed to knurl wider that the knurl rollers.

I have four lengths of 33 mm od pipe I need a coarse diamond knurl done on them. There is a local machine shop I haven't asked them yet if they can do it.

Don,t know what your intended final use is but bus handrail is normally around 30mm and can have a diamond finish on. might be worth a try if you get stuck.

Morning guys.
Question. I have four pieces of steel tubing 33 mm od. That i would like to be coarse diamond knurled . Now I understand it's done in the lathe. Not seen it done i have limited knowledge on the subject. Picture is the pipe that hasn't been cut to correct length. The pipe is streight but had to clean rust off it ect. Is the pipe in a reasonable condition to be knurled or shall I order a new length . Don't want to take them to my local machine shop to be told the pipe isn't good enough.

Yeah that can be knurled just as it is. You could ask them to run an emery up and down it first to remove the last of the rust but it's hardly necessary if you're not going to protect it as it will just rust again.

OK cool. I will cut two lengths to correct size and take them up next week.

How much are you knurling? They have to have something to put in the chuck.

Was just about to say if you cut to length and need it all knurled then they will need to make a couple of mandrels to hold it, better to be over length then cut later. I would talk to them first.

I would like it knurled all the way across but leaving an inch on both ends .if that makes sense.

I'd take it to the machine shop and let them decide how to do it.
If they want to do it as a whole then they can, if they want to cut it first they can.
Either way, they'll be able to cut it quite accurately in moments on a decent bandsaw while you watch, so I wouldn't be too bothered about doing that part yourself.
