Hammers, handles

I want to make a couple of small hammers 300g or 500g, and need to make the handle. It seems they are normally made from Hickory, which I do not have, and fixed with a wedge?

In my offcuts I found some 10x8x600mm Wenge which should do for the small one. I might glue it to get 10x15. Also a peice of ebony 10x60 for the bigger one.

Is it enough to drill a hole in the head and wedge a tapered bit in the end?

Id advice against wenge, any splinters ive had from it have reacted very badly.


But it makes a lovely wedge for an ash handle


Ps i have some ash if you pay postage.

It does splinter! Should be ok once sanded and oiled. I have some bigger ash offcuts, its a bit soft, not sure for a handle this small?

The guitar neck was a maple-wenge-maple sandwich, I have a 600mm length 50x30mm from that, but seems too nice to waste on a hammer.

Wenge NO. It can give rise to an infection.
But, if well sanded and sealed it should be ok.

Don't glue the wedge if it is a different wood to the handle.

Beech and hickory blanks are cheep enough on The Bay. Or a few ££££ at a decent hardware shop will get you handle.

Its a nasty wood to use.

Any old gardening tools (spade, fork, axe, hatchet, sledge hammer, pick axe, pitch fork) in the shed that you could borrow a handle from?

If you drill the hole, taper it a bit at the wedge end so the wood has something to spread into and maybe ovalise it a bit so the head does not try to rotate on the shaft.

Yes it is, you can notice the dust is instantly irritating to the skin, I always wear gloves and a mask, but it is strong, and beautiful when finished. I'll find another pic..

We used it alot of edging around veneer banding.
I also used some recently for a wedge on my treasured london pattern joiners hammer

This was from 2009, a lot more to do before it is finished. Problem is I bought a far better one, Ibanez S270 (like this, https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/ibanez-s270-bareknuckle-black-hawk-537518833 ) and rarely play it. Im not much good!
