hammerite smooth aerosol

just been painting a few worktools bright yellow so i can find them easy and bought a tin of aerosol paint dont bother buying it its like pi///water after 2 coats its still translucent and looks a mess it takes ages to harden as well . mixing it yourself from a can with celly thinners from a gun is ok but the aerosols are pants

Might its just the yellow? thats a colour with generally poor coverage,

Did a roll cage about 10 or so years back in silver aerosol hammerite and had great results.
maybe they've changed the formulation?

Loosely related, dont bother with the Ronseal garage floor paint its junk and certainly does not do what it says on the tin.

I used a can of white a couple of years back and it was good


Also used some black last year and it was ****


So either they changed it, the colours differ coverage wise or they have some poor ass quality control

It's been that way for a while now, there was a big fuss a few years ago about them changing something in it

Glad to know its not just me then, I thought I had got some bad cans or was spraying too cold. I've used it in the past and it was excellent, but the latest lot doesn't cover nearly as well. Back to the brush stuff I reckon.

I used some black a while back, several coats and no good, and was able to wipe it off a few hours later.
Try Plasticoat, did the same job perfectly.

Hammerite Smooth

Once my tins are gone I will not be buying any more, especially the spray cans. The thinners is ridiculously expensive now so what I have will be used with disposable brushes until it's gone. It's a shame as the smooth black in the original formula sprayed on with a final thinned down top coat came out like stove enamel. The best results I have had since are the engine and frame in the photos below, both sprayed with a Humbrol spray gun converted to compressed air. The grey was silver and black mixed ignoring the "DO NOT MIX!" instructions and could not have come out better but the straight silver was a b'stard to get any sort of shine on.

The BBQ paint you get in spray tins in home base are good though

I find Rustoleum Combi Color way better than Hammerite. I have not tried the spray cans though.

The tin stuff spreads well and covers well. It self levels to a nice finish.

I agree with that but the aerosols are not so good, too thin and the nozzles clog up. Regarding the tins of Combi Colour I have found that the lids do not re-seal very well although I have yet to find a better paint.
