Hammered edge box section

Just a query really, whats the idea behind hammered box section is it purely decorative or does it have any functionality (if thats the word?)

Cheers for the replies, thought i'd come accross some cheap so was just wondering why it was that price. Turns out i didnt read the small print and it was priced per metre not per length.
