Hammer handles

I can't quite explain why my "favourite little hammer" above is my favourite. I think it's the precision and the ease with which you can position it in your hand. Completely forgot the "pin hammer" naming convention or the 4oz bracket come to think of it.

By sheer coincidence I recently acquired a few metres of 20mm oak staves or battens. They may actually prove to be suitable now that I have nailed down the measurements, assuming the handle shaft does not go over 20mm in any dimension.

I have seen oak used for handles though not sure if it's really recommended but I do have a substantial collection of farriers rasps! Thankyouverymuchindeed!

Sadly oak is far to brittle splits far to easily. Which always suprises me.

For the couple of hammer heads I had left, I bought hickory handled pin hammers from ebay

I've still got a few pieces of 40 mm thick white ash by 150 wide by a 500 mm or so long that could be turned to make the basic rounds . To get them ovalid make a set off adjustable offsets a simple three position one for the chuck and a three point fixed end centre point style for the tailstock than set it up so you are turnig the offsets between centres , Use a Delrin dog to grip the wood so you don't mark it or use a four jaw chuck for one end of the off sets
A small belt sander with an open end is great for getting the best final shape as it does not dig in like a spoke shave can do .

Yes sounds like fun until you have to do it eight times, then clear up the mess!

I will get around to making one or two but I want to do a batch and @outofthefire is helping tremendously with that. I could have bought a few pin hammers and swapped the heads but that sort of flies in the face of my code of ethics. There's enough entropy as it is, I don't want to add to it unnecessarily. Plus it will be a nice story I can recall when I am fiddling about in the shed. I am doing this for fun not to create an industrial production facility.

I use my metal turning lathe to turn wood at 800 rpm with a prominently rounded cutting tip so I can cut easy clean left & right passes . Using the shed vacuum cleaner takes care of most of the dust & small chips as they are made .

You turn things in batches using a single operation at a time for each batch till each batch has had the whole series of operations done to it .
It's a good lockdown exercise , especially if you make hardboard patterns for top & side profiles of the shaft desired & then use a small bandsaw to take out most of the unwanted material taping some back where you need to support a cut side . Look at You Tubes for making a cabriolet leg in wood by hand to get the idea of the shapes or offsetting .

Commercially ..usually a " profile follower " is used to replicate the whole profile , they aren't that difficult to use or make but do take a while to design , construct & set up on the machine
