Hamerite smooth

Hi,
I wonder if you could give me some clarification, (not what you think but what you know)
I want to spray hamerite smooth red, and black, and concerned it has silicone
I understand hamerite hammered paint dous , also hamirite smooth gold and silver. The other smooth colours do not contain silicone.
I really do not want silicone floating around my garage and in my gun, as I understand you can't wash yhe silicone away

Best adviCe you will ever get, stay away from Hammerite. Tell us more about your requirements and we can be more helpful.

Unless you are painting stone, hammerite is useless. It's good for indoor hearths that are no longer used

Pretty sure mine is ‘Smoothrite”, not Hammerite smooth.

Made by Hunters back in the 1990s. That is one that needs 6 weeks before recoating, if allowed to dry.

I still have a large tin of Smoothrite red bought 40 years ago. It still gets used from time to time.

if its not too late find an alternative , the hammerite range is expensive and poor compared to other alternatives

as long as you don't try to measure the thickess with a caliper

i use the smooth all the time on machinery heating radiators and metal cabinets. its a good quality enamel i only ever pay less than half the price for big tins so well worth using i have got half a gallon of gold hamerite i paid a fiver for cant say i fancy anything that color though

I've used black smoothrite to smarten up my Honda Silverwing's wheels. Looks decent considering they were brushed. Although after I let it flash off I put them in the oven for 20 minutes.

Thank you Mr spark, and Mr rhubarb, I have lots of smothrite paint, I have been given an old rusty cabinet, I could give it the exspensive make over, but I want to brighten it up, I also have a no 4 flypress and an old super 8 drill that are going to get the treatment
That is why I asked about the spraying of smothrite, it would be quicker, however I do not want to contaminate my garage with silicone and risk fish eyes, I strongly believe the silicone is only in the hamerite

I’ve sprayed the original Hammerite using the proper thinners & it looked superb. I had a query about what I was doing so I rang them & was put through to their lab. I was told that it is an air curing resin rather than a paint & it air drys in an hour or so, but needs to cure & this takes several weeks dependant on temperature. This is why the “recoat in x minutes or wait until fully cured” I know the formula has changed & don’t know if it still applies though.

to answer the original question. yes it reacts badly with other paints, probably silicone based, so id spray in a boot made of plastic sheets to stop wrecking all your stuff and after cleaning the gun with gunwash id spray some silicone remover through it (if you paint this is a must have in the workshop) then gunwash again. will be fine to use the gun for normal paint after.

I have done my homework re smothrite spec it states that it is silicone free apart from the gold and silver
The hammer hamerite contains silicone across the board, I do not mind getting an answer that I do not want to hear
I wanted reassurance I suppose

I've sprayed smoothrite before with no problems, thinned with celly thinners and don't overcoat when dry or it will react.
