Halford’s jerry cans

On the basis that the only stupid question is the one that isn’t asked...

I bought a couple of Halford’s pressed steel jerry cans. I’m using them for diesel. Now, before filling them I noticed a solvent-like smell inside them, but didn’t worry too much about it.

Now having gone back a few days after filling them, the diesel within smells a wee bit “off”.

Has anybody ever noticed this, and does it indicate any risk of contamination or tainting of the diesel.

Obviously no suggestion that Halfords would supply cans with an unsuitable interior.

Advice appreciated. I’m keen to avoid the scunnering that would follow engine damage

The “solvent” smell is likely to be the residual odour of whatever coating was applied to the inside of the can.

All beer and fizzy pop cans are coated with a lacquer. This prevents the contents attacking the aluminium

Never done us any harm, assuming you drink beer and pop from a can

That’s wouldn’t be a good idea, but I suspect your vehicle won’t complain

Back in the last century Minis were stopping with yellow hairs choking the fuel pump filter. Eventually traced back to the yellow cloths being used to apply anti corrosive to the the sheet steel before it was pressed into half fuel tanks.
Allegedly!!

Chances are i's either the lube to stop the steel rusting after its rolled, or possible something to help the steel form as it's pressed

I wish they did diesel ones in bare metal.

Ive got about ten cans, admittedly all old, but the (red/brown coloured) lining paint is flaking on quite a few of them. Id prefer to take my chances with rust inside a well oiled can!

Yep mine all have red stuff peeling off. My pouring spout has a filter for water on it, stops the red stuff too

Ah, thanks fellas. There is reddish brown stuff visible. Good to know that you have seen this before.

I’m not going to chance it, at least not in a new engine.
