Grinding wheels and dressers

I'm getting close to sorting the motor and location for my Eagle Surface Grinder.
I have already removed the old wheel - as it's of unknown everything - and I am happy to learn from others mistakes
Now I need to buy a new wheel, and as a complete newbie to surface grinding, anything else that's required to get good results.
I will be grinding mild or tool steel.
I will not be grinding to the finest of tolerances (It's an old machine, and I'm not that precise unfortunately) and I will only be using it infrequently.
Is there an affordable wheel I should be buying - it looks like a minefield out there - has to be 7" - does anyone have a link?
I presume I need a dressing block - same question - does anyone have a link, or perhaps an old one that they want to sell on....
It doesn't look beyond the wit of man to prepare a block - in which case, do I just need the dressing tool?

Mount this in a small block or vice and place it on your mag table. They work fine.

I suggest you use some form of dust extraction or a shop vac while you are dressing the wheel as it can get a bit dusty

I have quite a few grinding wheels some of them profiled for special jobs but the ones that I use most are the white aluminium oxide wheels.

How critical is diameter? I can see a 200mm rather than 7" (175mm) - is it just the size of the guard, or is it more than that?

Diameter will affect the surface speed. You'd need to check the rating on the wheel.

If you use a VFD to reduce the RPM you may find you stall the wheel. I'd just avoid larger wheels.

Got the motor running on the VFD at the weekend- mightily relieved my butchery of the star connection worked. It is probably my quietest motor- even the bearings had fresh grease.
Cleared the final location- just need to get it moved then fit the wheel and see how it goes

Should the wheel run clockwise when viewed from the front?

What hand is the retaining bolt/nut? That should give you a clue.

Eagles run anti-clockwise viewed from the front. 7" wheels work fine so do 8". The 7 inch wheel will act a little 'softer' due to the 7/8ths RPM but it won't be something you would notice.
