grinding discs

i used to be a valetter in a bodyshop and they had a grinder with flexible discs used without a backing plate and i want some but dont know what they are called. i bought a disc from an abrasives shop after asking them for a flexible one and it lasted about 20 minutes before it was unusable as the centre of the disc seperated from the outer
the ones used in the bodyshop had the spindle hole with a cross
does anyone know what these discs are called

These are the only ones I can think of that don't use a backing disc.

The ones with the cross slit in them use a backing disc to keep their shape,they're only paper.

cheers dave it wasnt the ones listed they definately had a cross in them but with you saying they are used with a backing pad im now not 100% sure they were used without a backing pad but im quite sure as i remember the discs being really flexible when i moved the grinder once
i suppose it could be a case of they were using them without a backing pad and not how they should have been used

I use these sort of discs on tubing with no backing pad. They have a 0.8mm fibre backing to hold them together, they follow curved surfaces nicely but will fly apart if used against sharp edges.

swiss tony im after one that doesnt use a backing pad as i want a disc that will flex a lot
it looks like the bodyshop were using the discs without a backing pad when they should have had a pad on the grinder

The nylon backing pad I use with fibre disks flexes really well, I don't see any way to secure them without a backing pad as they are too thin for the centre to grip.

Here are a couple of pics of the things i use.




These were from the page on the link in my previous post. They are made by Flexovit the same as in Flathead_Dave's link.



The nut clamps down on them with no problem at all.

I should imagine the cross bit is to allow them to clamp to a backing pad so i am not using them as they were intended to be used and they will disintegrate if abused.

The disks with the cross in are standard fibre backed sanding disks, and are intended for use with a rubber backing pad, reddish brown ones are aluminium oxide, usually used on mild steel, the blue ones are zirconium and are better for stainless, the cross is irrelevant, some have them some dont.
