I have been doing stick welding for years and have even done some underwater welding when I was working as a commercial diver. I am now finally going to upgrade to MIG.

I found this site and after viewing for awhile it seems like there is lots of good information and help here.

My current project is going to be the restoration of a Jeep CJ8 Scrambler. I have already done the fram with my Lincoln, but the body panels are just too thin. Hence my current plan to buy MIG.

In the buying stages and still trying to learn. One question that I have concerns wire speed. Example
MM 175 has wire speed of 20-700 IPM while the replacement
MM 180 has wire speed of 90-700
Is this going to be too fast for working on thin sheet metal.

The whole MIG welding thing is a balance between, wire size and speed, voltage, gas, metal thickness and so on, as I'm sure you have already figured out.

As a way of calculating what might best suit your purposes.

From what I have read on here a reliable wire feed mechanism comes as high on the list of priorities as anything else.

Welding tips

Hello again,
I met a guy the other night, merchant navy chap, and couldn't resist moving onto welding, it's my thing, y'know, and of course he'd had a go, so when I said MIG, TIG... he looked at me gone out. Turned out he was spot on with MMA (what else do you get on your average ship) turned me upside down, and I reckon he could easily work out the rest (and turn me upside down again)
If you've welded underwater you'll cope. Choose a machine with the parameters you want, don't be a tw*t (protection and that) work it out and come back here and tell us what you've learnt.
