Greenhouse build

Just wondering if anyone has ever attempted making a greenhouse frame.

Now that I have the MetalCraft XL I fancy making a nice greenhouse from angle iron similar to this one -

Or this one -

Anyone attempted this before ??

P.S. I am aware that the majority of greenhouses are aluminium, but I will be using mild steel and powder coating the frame.

couldn't believe how much I paid for glass recently. I'd reckon by the time you've bought the steel, got it powdered and then bought the glass panels individually, you'll end up costing a hell of a lot more than a kit... is it worth it?. your choice...

All that steel's going to cost a fair bit - as said above, whilst it'll be enjoyable making it, you'll probably be spending several times what it'd cost to get an aluminium and glass kit, and it won't necessarily perform any better.

basically it depends if you need a project or not. If like me, you'be alrerady got too many, I'd walk away from this one, but if not then why not. Would definitely be a good project, just not very economical I'd say. Then again if we were sensible every time where would we be... ..

Bit like a battery tray I repaired for my car. When I found out that a new one only cost £16 and I had spent hours stripping it, removing rust, primed and painted it I realised what a crazy waste of my time it was.

I am actually just putting together a kit greenhouse.......HALLS is the manufacturer

Its not easy........the instructions are crap and there are loads of fiddly bits and jesus springs

took me all day to make the front and back

Oh and ages to get the base level and securely held down........ive slabbed it inside and im getting too old for lifting 3x2's and bending the back

Our next door but one gave us his 6x8 Halls aluminium greenhouse, we took the glass out and lifted the frame over the wall. I built a block base to stand it on and screwed it down and refitted the glass and my wife grows tomatoes and cucumbers in it. Look at Rhino greenhouses for a standard to aim for and you might not mind spending some money but I don't think steel is the way to go personally.

I turned by greenhouse (which I think is a Halls, or similar design anyway) round by 180 degrees so the door was at the other end. Took all the glass out (cleaned it all whilst it was out too), then just unbolted it from the concrete and lifted it up. Nice and easy.

I may consider keeping a look out for some free aluminium ones and I could weld / hack them together into one large one.

I did find some in the local ads but the guy had already got rid - he had 2 free greenhouses 12x10 and 14x12 which would have been great.

I'll start putting some prices together as I can get the steel at reasonable prices.

Might look also to use old double glazed units for the windows as a mate of mine replaces double glazing for a living.
