Interesting - anyone have any thoughts on this? Seems like the sort of thing that the UK would have developed back in the day.

In my fairly uneducated opinion I have always thought hydrogen would play a part in the move towards renewable processes, but instead of powering cars it will be used in industrial processes more.

So they wasted energy making hydrogen to make steel that could have been made using the fuel they made the hydrogen with ?

It’s already being looked at in other areas too such as a replacement for natural gas in generating plant. Using wind and solar to manufacture hydrogen in an adjacent plant then pump it straight into gas turbines.
now the technology is getting cheaper it probably won’t be long before we’ve all got a hydrogen boiler in the house, or a small local generating plant or even hydrogen transport.
I like the principle but it’s got a long way to go, the energy usage currently required to produce hydrogen is quite substantial.

I’m doing some work in the controls system at a glass manufacturing plant to trial using hydrogen as a furnace fuel on a big float glass line.

They have just done a trial on one burner in steps until it was at 100% hydrogen, the next step is to add hydrogen to the main gas manifold so all 8 burners are running on a blend (up to 20% hydrogen ) of hydrogen and gas. Ironically I probably won’t be able to get there for the next trial as I’m on an oil/gas platform

Hydrogen is wonderful stuff.
Sadly making it is very wasteful which means it is far from green.
