green oak roof trusses

im working on a house build and the guys had oak roof trusses made and fitted in green oak . all the wood was cut and shaped with a chainsaw an axe a chissel an a wood bit .the guy that has made them up served his time with robert thompson of kilburn mouseman furniture who work in just oak i have a breadboard made by them its worth £100 .00 heres the pictures of the trusses not all skills are being lost just no one to carry them on when the older folk retire

Hi Brightspark, my other half's family has a lot of "Rabbitman" furniture, he'd worked at the Mouseman's and then went solo but the Rabbit Craft place shut down in the 90s sadly. Lovely stuff there.

i live in a bungalow and after showing the missus these pics she now wants me to rip the ceiling down in the living room and follow the roof line with open beams just like that...spring job me thinks

this is what kind of stuff i do for a living its not a lost trade at all im 25 and the two guys i work with are 26 and 40 . something we have done recently . a two story glazed gable :-)

I used to do work for an outfit that made that kind of stuff. They had a rip saw, a big thicknesser which got used occasionally and the biggest hand-held electric planer ever, which did most of the finishing/ sizing.
The mortices were cut with a chain morticer, tenons with a very good quality german circular saw, and all the fine work with big, (mostly Canadian) chisels.
Jobs like that are not done on big machines - you can't as the timber is never square and true. Each joint has to be marked and cut to suit. Essentially it was mostly made "by hand", but using hand-held electric machines where possible. No loss of skill, just a gain in speed.

just as he says ^^^^ we use circular saws one large the others typical sizes a sellection of chisels, handsaws . bandsaw for cutting curves . varying size of planers levels and string bobs . all of our work is stack scribed and nothing done on machines , machines are out there to do it but the joint quality isnt as good as being done by hand , to give an idea of that truss size the pegs are all inch pegs

One thing I've always wondered: why do the pegs seem so undersized compared to the timber and the loads on it? Or do the joints not experience loads that would pull them apart (like wind, warping with time)?

Mate, that is some beautiful work. As some of the others have saidI`ve always thought it was a dying art but i`m so glad to see that its making a come back. Keep up the good work and keep the art-form living!

joints are allways built so they are under compression generally so the pegs are more to locate and keep the joint alligned rather than acting say like a bolt could hold parts together and experiance shear loads
