On the news it said the Bomb disposal guys were using a robot with water jet to cut the fuse out but the water outflow destabilised the sand bund they had placed round the bomb, So they changed to a controlled burn off which set it off.
Having met a couple of those bomb disposal guys a few years back when we found a grenade under our house I can attest to the fact that they are bloody good. Most of the time they get little jobs with small stuff but occasionally get big ones like the one in Great yarmouth. They must have cojones of a similar size to that bomb.

I wonder how the bomb got there... I mean, the answer seems obvious but it looks very superficial in that aerial shot and surely that sea wall was constructed post war?!

Everyones saying thats a loud bang (which it is) but imagine when the Jerries were dropping multiple bombers worth of them all going off together...!

It was dredged out of the water just lucky it never went up when they dug it up

They found a 500lbs bomb less than a mile from our house a couple of yrs ago. Two Lancs had crashed mid-air, they must have missed this one. Took over a week to get ready for blowing.

Yarmouth coastline is full of them. It got battered during the war. It was earmarked as a landing area for the German DDay as the only deep water port on the east coast at that time.

Loads got ditched just off the coast by returning bombers as well.

Although the place is a ****hole the area has an interesting history.

That one was dredged up in the civils though.

Down the gulf we got called to action stations at 2 in the morning because we almost hit a “mine”.

Turned out to be a dead bloated sheep - the legs sticking out made it look like a classic sea mine with prongs

Went to a lecture by a well known Bomb disposal guy at the HBSA lectures and he was quite funny but some of the antics they got up to diffusing live ordnance, well, you can keep it. The lecture was entitled "Ten fingers and still counting". He did a lot of the London bombs and learned his trade in Northern Ireland. Great guy but he can keep his job.

It's not a job I would want to do. I fired fireworks for a while. One guy had a T shirt with writing on the back 'If you see me running, try and keep up!' But all kudos to the guys who do it, There's still a lot of ordinance out there
