Greasy Flange Protector ?

Hi,

Can anyone please let me know what the correct name is for a wad of grease impregnated rope like material that looks like it is protection for a bearing located in a two bolt flange housing? I need to buy some more but I am not sure what the name of the item is.

I have attached a picture below, the greasy wad is the dark coloured item located between the blue flange bearing housing above it and the galvanised steel plate below it.

Hi, It's commonly called rope seal it was widely used on engines as a crankshaft seal before they progressed to lip seals. So try engine machine shops or re-conditioners especially those that deal with older stuff like Bedfords or Perkins. If they don't carry it they would know where to get it.

Neighbour had a gas leak. Turned out to be the metal feed pipe where it came out of the ground. Repair involved removing all the metal pipe from house down to the, newish, yellow main in the road. The old metal pipe was covered with Denso tape and despite being in the ground for 30+ years was like new when we removed the tape (to be nosey).
