GPO Markings

Any one here know anything about GPO Markings.

On one of my Vices I have discovered what looks like the following Markings.

GPO, curved round a crown.
What looks like a date and then some numbers.

They are faint and very hard to take any images off..

The date looks like it has been over stamped with new markings.

Any pointers will be gratefully received.

As a guess its inspection to deem it safe to use, redate after repairs ?
Alternatively itcould be who it was issued to the GPO lads used to rob the place blind during nationalisation of the who kit kaboodle (my Dad was one of them it was quite beyond what people might believe today as possible )

The date will be a supply date, the other numbers would be the Rate Book number, the GPO equivalent of a catalogue number. All GPO kit had the date stamped on it, a lot had the Rate book code & possibly a serial number.

Mate was a Telecom manager before retirement. He started when it was the GPO and says that stood for "God's Poor Orphans"

What's the history?

The Crown stamp is to indicate that is was "Crown Property". The GPO meant it was issued to the GPO.
There should be a stamping to indicate what department it was issued to. Mine is missing.

The date is when it was issued, over stamping in when it was either:
Issued to another department. Or reissued.
Repair stamping? May have bean, but back the GPO would "Write it off". After all it was the "government purse."

There should be another number, what would be a "Stock Number"

As Mine is missing it would lean to it being "War Reserve stock" or issues to the GPO for stores and never issued.

As the stamping for the department is missing and no "Stock Number" it would indicate that it was never issued to a "run of the Mill" department. Properly it was purchased for use in one of the many "Cold War" set ups the GPO was involved with.

The casting on my vice is a constant finish, so no grinding or filling has happened in the area of the stampings I can guess they were never there.

Also some equipment from the GPO had a brass plaque fitted. If mine did it was glued. There are no rivet holes.

But it works and it is MINE.
