My turning experience is limited to doing a couple of phos bronze bushes on my bro in laws myford, so it's a whole new learning curve for me! Mate of mine is a fitter/turner in the shipyard so I'll pay him in brews and curry and get some tips!
You'll get the hang of it quickly enough. Nowt better than some odds and sods of metal and practice to get you acquainted with a machine. There's the Sparey book and the old Odhams & Caxton workshop series books have sections on lathework too, if you want to get some reference tomes to help you along.
