I've never attampted any ally welding before, but a mate brought me this 3/4" impact wrench to see if I can do anything with it.
I haven't stripped it yet, but does anyone have any usefull tips (apart from use it as a paperweight!).

Hmmm they might just honor that as its the case but warranty on air tools doesn't cover the internals (anvil etc), So id say its worth a chat with the local snap-on bloke.

what about having a try of that hts-2000 stuff, low melting point aluminium braze product?

Hi Big Mick,
I agree with the other guys, try for a warranty claim first. But other wise I have used the low melting point aluminium brazing rods same type as HTS-2000 a few times on similar jobs and had great results. Do a little practice on scrap and then go for it,

I think the stuff I used was called Alumaweld but basically all the same technique, check out google there are a few demo-vids knocking about.

I'm assuming the warranty route is a no go.

Otherwise I would not have the job!
Must admit that I hadn't considered the low temp methods and was going to try welding it, since I do possess the mother of all tig sets.

One year warranty on powertools and aittools i believe...

Id expect the biggest problem will be getting it clean enough, i expect its well oil soaked.
Dont know whats inside down the nose, burn through might be an isse if its a bearing/seal in there somewhere.

Have recently tried a repair on a 21HP B&S engine. Had thrown a rod and cracked the case.

Tried TIG (on my TIG that makes yours look small ). Even after cleaning many times with solvents, heating with a torch, still fought contamination.

Figured MIG would be easier, still had contamination problems and other problems (could not get enough heat with 4043 wire and 5356 cracked.).

Finally went with my old standby: AlumniWeld brazing rods. Worked like a charm. The stuff takes practice, especially the need to "stir the weld" to get through the oxidation. There are others brands out there. I have had similar results with Burnzamatic rods.

From the last pic in the OP it looks to me like there's at least another couple of cracks branching off the big 'un, looks like it's had a good innings. 3/4" rattle gun... wouldn't want one of those shattering on me. Those zinc rich "aluminium brazing" fillers are pretty brittle, can't see it lasting on something like an impact wrench personally

Hi All!

Looks like it has had a good innings' Welding stuff like this up is fraught with "when will it come back"? Which it will as it's designed to take hard knocks and impact stresses' As soon as you put a weld on it, you are altering the mechanical properties of the metal! Usually for the worse!
