I love using Google Earth to explore remote parts of the world. As a little boy I had a fascination with maps and was lucky enough to travel to some very remote areas. I always dreamed of having a map you could just zoom in and in until you could see the land below - and it actually happened!
Panoramio was the layer that had all the photos tagged to locations. It wasn't perfect - idiots would upload photos in the wrong place etc but it was still very useful.
I was just zooming in on the Libyan desert and noticed all the photos had gone. There were nice ones taken at various oasis and historical landmarks etc. Now all gone! Google turned it off last month! It was used a lot by lots of professionals - geologists - archaeologists - students.
I also found it useful for identifying the World's remotest areas - the less photos the less people had been there.
Why did Google finish it? Very annoying!
