try letting your 1 year old dog of its lead and it runs after a rabbit and gets run over by a car and it takes an hour to die in your arms 2 years on and its still bad sh ,,.,.t

There is nothing worse. Been there, my last dog i got from the pound & had him for 12 years, best hunting dog i ever had. Broke me up when he was put down.

Ya just brought a tear to my eyes mate, had to do that quite a few times myself and it doesnt get any easier, had my lad Bruce only one yr old, he got bone cancer had his leg off coz of the pain and was fine and happy and LOVED life for 18mths till it got to his lungs. BUT keeping them alive and in pain, is for YOU, NOT the dog!, You did the right thing HARD but right !! You freed him.

Mine was a scruffy thing I got from the dog pound as a pup, 15 years old when the time came, that final journey was a nightmare and I used to avoid the road where the vets is for months after.

Gerty was the only good thing to happen to me in the last 10 years.

A stray the came into my life who only purpose in life was to make me happy.

Losing her was harder than losing my EX. She was queen of the houshold for near 7 years.

I feel your pain. When I posted her loss on the "Show us your pets thread" I was touched by the responses. We've been there. Pets become part of who we are and we cant remember dates of things in our past but we can remember who the dog/cat/other was there with us.

Been there and it is hard. Homer, my 14 year old lab was put to sleep about 20 years ago. I still have his dog tag in my office.

Mind you, my 14 year old staffie ate too many bones yesterday; the farts this evening, combined with that bit on How Britain Works with Guy Martin making leather from 'pure' - lordy, we had Smellovision...

I don't have any problem admitting it aways breaks my heart when any of our pets, and there have been a lot, dies. Doesn't matter if big or small it still affects me the same way. At present I'm suffering a total emotional / mental breakdown. Not first but hope it will be the last yet doubt it. In and out of the mental health system all my life and taking high dose of medication yet nothing could stop the current episode. I can go on and on but that isn't really relevant. I have 2 dogs (plus loaner of a friend who is on holiday) and 5 cats. Everyone is precious to me yet all I see if them getting old and not being here any more. The feeling is horrendous so know exactly what other mean. When my last dog died (we only had the one at the time)I was bereft and felt like my own life had finished. It took me a while to recover and then I couldn't face another dog. Best thing to help ease the pain was going to the local dogs home, just a few hundred yards away, and falling in love with a shy mongrel. After a while decided I needed two dogs in my life (we had 2, then 3, for probably 20 years before dropping down to the one due to the others simply getting old and passing away) and they are part of me. Illness means I'm not very mobile so can't take them walks (son and daughter do that as they like walking anyway). The stick with me all the time. I spend a lot of time in bed and it's comforting to know they are on the bed with me otherwise I can be alone, feeling ill, for days at a time when i'm the most vunerable.

I think as they get older and even more dependant on you the more attached you get. My dad is hard as nails but when his Rottweiler Ellie was put down he showed a side I've never seen before. I'm like him in many ways and don't show any kind of emotion (my missus calls me heartless and an emotionless b*****d) but we have a 3 nearly 4 yr old Dogue de Bordeaux who at most times is a pain in the **** (mainly because she's scared of literally everything) but when she's got her head on my lap snorin her head off while I'm watching tele you can just tell there feelings for you are clearly unconditional! I didn't want a dog but now she's like a bad smell that won't leave me alone but I wouldn't have it any other way

Sorry to hear of your loss

I had to put my english bull terrier Sherman down after 17 years of dragging me around, getting me into embarassing scrapes and costing me a fortune at the vets. Very hard. Many of my friends still have photos of him in their wallets next to the picture of their GFs/wives. Its been about 8 years now since his demise and at first I liked the freedom of responsibility however now my daughters are growing up and we have moved out of the smoke I'm looking forward to gettting a couple of dogs again.

Pedigree Chum - should rename it Vile Bum - guaranteed to make their farts smell like satans bottom and burn your nasal hairs. We only fed it to him when we had visitors coming around that we didn't want to stay too long......

I always say to people a big part of owning a pet is knowing that one day you'll have to say goodbye to it and if you can't deal with it then maybe think twice about getting a pet.
We've lost 4 dogs and a horse since we've lived here, the horse had to be put down on the morning of new year's day 2000, a horrendous start to the millennium.
One of the hardest for me was taking our staffie x to the vets in the morning for an exploratory op, handing her to the receptionist but never seeing her again.
The vet rang to say she was riddled with tumours and the kindest thing was not to resuscitate her.

But life has to go on i know that,so its off back to the rescue homes and hopefully give another dog a chance of a good home

I lost Toby just over a year ago to lymphagestasia complicated by diabetes. He was only 6! He was my very first Clumber Spaniel. It still hurts!

When we found out the vet said he had maybe weeks at best a couple of months. That weekend the weather was lovely so we took him up to Salisbury Plain (he always enjoyed the sniffs there) he had a great time, but was exhausted when we'd finished. He passed away the following Wednesday. I was always pleased we did that trip sooner than later.

Clumber Spaniels - known for their 3 S's - snoring, shedding, slobber!

Really sorry for your loss .... i know how your feeling .I lost Holly our collie x lab 3 months ago . My first four legged companion .Had her since a pup ,she passed away aged 13 .
It certainly hits you hard ,shed lots of tears. It really was bad seeing her lying there stiff and cold .Having to carry her body out to the car really was a surreal experience . Still have her ashes in a box upstairs ,intend to scatter them in her favourite places (when the time feels right )
Bought a couple of small holly trees as a more permanent 'memorial ' ,hopefully one of them is a female and we might get some berries one day .

I know exactly what you're feeling, been there twice.
Last to go was our 15 year old Westie, 18 months ago ............. so much a part of the family
Currently have 3 Westies - 14, 8 & 1 year old. Eldest showing signs of slowing, so know what the not to distant future holds.

Another dog in your life will ease your pain and over time will become you're close companion

We have 7 dogs at home at the moment. 5 between my wife and myself (3 x Clumber Spaniel, 1 x Italian Spinone and 1 x Sprocker) and my daughter has an Italian Spinone and a Clumber!
