good quality combination square *recommendations?

I have been on the lookout for a decent 2nd hand combination square. Moore & Wright/Mitutoyo etc. New set is well over £100+
Can anyone recommend a tried and tested cheaper alternative that will last and quality?

Decent quality & has stood up to all the abuse I have given it.

Mitutoyo are the best IMO, followed closely by Moore and Wright. They are cheaper second hand on ebay where they come up fairly regularly, definitely worth the money!

Don't be tempted to buy the cheaper cast alloy ones, they last being dropped about twice then smash into a million pieces.

I've never had much luck with cheaper ones.

Mitutoyo are in my opinion the best set which also Goes for calipers, vernier, micrometers etc.
As above I personally wouldn't buy cheaper ones. I've seen them where the protractor gage moves, sprit levels set on the pi$$ etc and I'm not taking 10-20 quid worth I'm talking 40-60 quid. Best to spend and get a good set. Starret ones were always pretty good too.

As part of our corporate UKAS accreditation, I did a Metrology course at Mitutoyo UK in Coventry; when I asked how they evaluate the competition's products the guys essentially looked at each other and said "What competition?".
Our metrology lab at work is mostly Mitutoyo equipment.
As I've said before, even £8 Aldi/Lidl digital calipers are, within their resolution, as accurate and repeatable as much more expensive branded units.
Whether they last any time is another matter...

There is a deal on ebay at the minute mitutoyo set for £154. Cromwell tools did me a special price (I've spent a few quid in there recently) of £190.
I may buy the starret hardened and forged though

Very true, you could probably improve feel if you lapped in the rough-cut bit of copper acting as a gib strip
