Here’s one I made earlier (about 1982, to suit a Saab 99). Cobbled together in a hurry from bits of scrap, with M12 bolt for the pivot, M16 bolt to apply the force. Never failed me yet.
I too have broken one of the original type you posted and moved on to the fork splitter but hate bashing it in to the joint as I keep thinking of all the other bearings/seals attached to the same arm
It seems gentler to me to undo the nut a couple of turns and manoeuvre the vehicle around
Most breakages are due to using the tool incorrectly and I am guilty of the same error. Once I broke one, I found out how it should be done. You should wind up the tension on the splitter and not try to break the taper with it. One or two good taps with a hammer and it will release. The tool is not designed to produce the splitting force on its own.
Clearly you guys live charmed lives, this ball joint broke the first splitter, with the second I spent 5 mins thumping the bottom with a hammer, and finally it wasn't till I got a torch onto it that it split, of course by this time the ball joint boot was toast!
