I popped in to my local steel suppliers this morning to pick up a bit a steel (no really I did), had a ratch about, found some steel that will do the job. While doing the deal I happened to mention that I needed a prop shaft shortening and wondered if they would be up for doing the job.

I had the prop in the back of the Landy so grabbed it and popped it in to the workshop expecting to drop it off and pick it up at a later date. Nope. I had the prop pulled out of my hand, whacked on to the bench, 50mm shaved off and then rewelded in less time than it took for me to drink a cup of coffee.

So prop shortened, steel collected, some good crack about shortening props on old wagons and I only parted with a tenner

So hats off to the good old fashioned service provided by Watson & Sons at Bigrigg (in darkest Cumbria)

You won't find many places will do that these days, good for them.

Wouldn't need rebalancing if they are canny enough to scribe a line on it prior to cutting.

Just up the road from me, used to get my steel there many years ago and my Father used to go up of a Sunday morning to have the crack with Derek Watson, put the world to rights and sample his home made wine and other certain drinks that involved copper vessels and pipework

I would have thought that balancing was essential with an item like that as if its not perfect the damage it can cause at full chat would be devastating. Not least for peace of mind then anything else.

It'll likely be readily felt if its balance is shot. It might need it or it moght not, but they'll soon know one way or the other. Besides, if it's for the Landy, I doubt it can do much more to make vibrations any worse.

It was scribed prior to it being cut down. It is for the Landy so I'll run it and see. If there is more shake, rattle and roll than usual then I'll get it balanced

i shortened an atlas propshaft on a 2.1 ford pinto. at 3o mph it juddered a bit all i did was put a dti gauge near the welded end clocked a bit of runout and taped a 1inch square of 1.8th plate on the oposite side it balanced perfectly so i welded it on and ran it from zero up to full speed through the gears with back wheels chocked off the ground no vibration whatsoever
