Good books on welding for a beginner

I am looking for a book on basic welding techniques - how to weld together flat pieces of mild steel, welding round bar to flat bar etc.
So, I need books with pictures showing the best way to do this, and also, possible a book showing the strength of mild steel when welded - torque strength, tensile etc.

Are there any good books for these things? Thanks.

The link will redirect you, but hopefully it will be usable. It's not the most recent publication, but there's still plenty of useful info. A more recently published hardback copy can be bought off Amazon, or eBay for not a huge amount of money for this sort of thing.

Jody from welding tips and tricks on youtube i found was really good when learning, his arc shots are incredibly clear so you can really see whats going on, and he is a great teacher

When I first started, I had a SIP welder and a VHS video from TWI Glad to say learning resources (and welders!) now are much better! As others have said, Jody is really good, both at explaining and demonstrating.

Both are college course books but very helpful.....and both can be found on line in pdf form for free with a bit of digging....

Niche topic, but "The B.O.C. Handbook for Oxy-Acetlyene Welders" is an excellent resource for a topic which is less well served these days.

Problem is you can spend days looking at tons of ways from 1000's of folk out there and all will have a different method however small,its trial and error my friend
Best bet is get a few pointers and get practising,take pics and come back here for all the feedback and advice you'll need

Hot & fast, keep arc at the leading edge, arc force penetrates cold metal better.

1. Modern Welding Technology by H.B. Cary
2. Welding Handbook, 7th Edition, Volume 4: Metals and Their Weldability by the American Welding Society (AWS)
3. Welding Metallurgy and Weldability of Nickel-Based Alloys by John C. Lippold and Damian J. Kotecki

This is a very plain and simple guide I found . It explains the very basics to get you started, I've found it much better than a lot of other books because it is so simple. Of course nothing beats practice, practice, practice and a friend ( who can weld ) who will honestly tell you where your going wrong, or if course putting your welding up for scrutiny and help on here.
