Gold tungstens?

Having a chat today with Langy on here about the gold tipped/lathenated? tungstens, was thinking about trying them, i normally always use reds for mild n stainless and white for ali,
Anyone actually used them (not read about them) and with what results?

I have tried them and I don`t like them , have a bit of trouble with stainless , the tip don`t last long have to keep grinding to a point , prefer the Red ones , but for Ali they ball up fine ! not sure if its me or the tungsten

hmm yeh same as really not really as good as red/white but they work ok never really had a problem with them

blue does me for everything.
didnt like gold or black

Thanks chaps, never had problems with red or whites but sometimes we all stick with what we know for years then find out theres a better option,
might still try them on both ac and dc to see what difference this is or improvement?

We tend to use the blues lanthanted ones for just about everything now.

Not sure if its just me, but I still prefer using the red thoriated ones if I have a fair bit to do.

Babcock welding services use gold for all steel work now, HSE banned the red ones

I just tried the Gold ones today, like Gary (chevy2) i use red for steel & stainless & white for ally, I ran a couple of beads around 150mm long on some bright mild and they seem fine but there is a definite difference to the red on the stainless, like someone above said the point seems to go off quick on S/S
I will check them out on aluminium tomorrow and let you know.

Gary there is a couple of them on the end of the bench for you to try them out when you pop in tomorrow, don't forget them
