Bit vague. Welding fab etc ?
some times its a balance between what you would like ,, what you actually need ,, and what the job will stand.
The customer will tell you how they value the job if you listen to them talk
some times its wiser to say no ,, remember this , these words of wisdom will last you a life time , its all about how early you twig onto this , so brace your self

If it's something I enjoy doing, £10-£15/hr
Something I don't like doing £20-£40/hr
Something only I can do £100/hr (sadly I no longer have any exclusive talent other than "made by Screwdriver")
One interesting tidbit from Jody at weldingtipsandtricks (?) was to charge £1 per inch of weld. It is surprising how sensibly those charges work out compared to more complex calculations that sort of end up at the same price.

The ideas good , but if you charge low the first time you have set the rate for ever ...
bankruptcy hearings are full of speculators.

It's a balance, obviously one cannot work for nothing bit the entire world of business is built on speculation to accumulation...those expensive tools and equipment you need to buy at the start.
Expand your box too, sitting at home watching repeats of Jeremy Kyle damages more than just your wallet.

That's the difference between earning a wage and making profit. Yes I'm flexible to a degree but usually when I'm being charitable, not in the hope that at some unspecified future point there will be more work, because 99.99% of the time it just doesn't happen.
The £2k I spent on tools last year wasnt speculation, I had a full order book so they were required

Deposits paid on all jobs, I dont spend 1 penny of my own money on customers, I agree it's not paid until it's done but you dont even get in the diary until the deposit is in my bank
Ive never bought anything with money I didnt have ,,, the profit from the last job pays for the tools for the next , and not the other way round , and I was buying ELM Barcos at the time ,,,
that way if something went wrong I could grit my teeth and walk away , and only be out the cost of the crew not be sitting in a hole for the price of the gear .

I didn't intend to make this a heated argument. Some are misunderstanding my sentiments.
When it comes down to brass tacks my opinion on the matter is mostly worthless because I am PAYE.
@Kayos, for what it's worth I have been self employed before, in a different industry where I set my own rates so I'm not just spouting spurious and ignorant claims.
