Go kart reverse

Just a thought more than any else

My mates got his little un a gx engined go kart for Christmas. We had around 6 hours of fun in it bouncing round a field feeling like we were six again!!

One thing that did occur to me is there is no reverse on it, does any one know of any karts that use the mower type engines that have a reverse?

No, I've never seen one with a reverse. Balloo is the kart/buggy man. I'm sure he'll see this

Don't know anything about carts, barr they can go fast.

As for reverse, people struggle fitting it to a trike, so a little kids cart is going to be fun. Usually it's a starter motor, acting on a custom made sprocket fitted to either the prop, or halfshaft.

Stick a Wing motor and G/Box or Harley motor in it then you could use a Rev-Tech G/box with reverse as std

Generally it's not considered necessary as the driver can jump out and easily move it backwards. Not even many Quads have reverse, it's only the big, commercial types as far as I know.

with a 1.6 fiat twincam engine!

well shoxDr and tigler have said it all really, not usually worth the effort to engineer reverse into a small buggy, just get some else to push you back out of the bushes honda goldwing uses the starter motor to obtain reverse fine for moving you away from the kerb but unlikely to withstand repeated use off road,
rotax have an interesting idea for reverse on some of their engines, they just go backwards
Lee has one fitted in his honda pilot, 140 bhp in a 300 kg buggy thats about 450 bhp per ton by far the quickest thing l have ever driven in anger

you just come to a stop press a button and the engine dies and then picks up again running backwards and you press the accelerator very very very gently unless you want to look really stupid lol

What rotax is that Andy? Iv got a spare mt500 engine and a complete spare mt500 bike sitting in my parents garage!! The fastest buggy I drove was the fireblade rage buggy but they ran a quaiffe rear diff 2k odd for one of those

It'll be a 2 stroke, you'd have fun trying to make a 4 stroke run backwards !

I've got a brand new reverse gearbox :-)
It fits to a Honda GY6 copy engine on the swinging arm where the hub would be on a scooter. Would be easy to adapt to "stand alone use. In fact I've got a brand new GY6 engine together with another used GY6 engine I intend selling some time or other. It came from a quad (still in the frame kept as a cradle) that the engine was started with throttle open so it shot forward and ripped a front suspension arm off so has only run for a second ot two !
£100 the lot - new 125cc electric start engine, used engine, new reverse gearbox, fuel tanks, wiring harness etc if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the offer paul but its too close to chrimbo for me to buy anything my other half will kill me!

I had thought about a quad cvt rear end as i have seen some buggys on ebay that have the same clone engine with a forward neutral reverse box.

My dad said many moons ago his old bike if it was kicked before TDC it would run backwards il have to ask him what make it was, i can guarantee it will be expensive what ever it is!

On the subject of building your own go karts has anyone on here a good source for free downloadable plans. Also is there a preference for round tube over square box or a mix maybe and one final question has anyone on here any experience with the JD2 Model 3 or model 32 tube bender. They look to be a fantastic bender if a little expensive. Perhaps they'res an equally good less expensive option that I don't know about?

There's plans on the internet for jd2 type benders , mine cost £25 in materials .
