ok so lastly today i called into machine mart and picked up a pair of welding gloves, how on earth am i supposed to do anything with a pillow on each hand ? is there anything else i can wear, can i wear any leather gloves etc??
I recently bought similar and thought the same but stuck with them, they do soften and mould to your hand and are now great to use when handling hot steel.
I also bought some TIG leather cheapies off Fleabay, they are soft thin unlined leather and are also spot on..they were about £3 a pair
I use a tig glove on the hand that holds the torch and the thicker mig glove on the hand that holds the torch steady and rests close the the work being welded. If you are only welding in short bursts ie, car panel work there shouldn't be that much heat generated that you would be comfortable using the thinner tig of mig glove. It's all down to what you are comfortable wearing.
What they said, they wear in quickly. At work I tend to wear a rigger glove on my torch hand but always a gauntlet on my supporting hand unless i'm welding a lot then its a gauntlet on both hands
Go to a decent local welding suppliers, they should have a few brands, and try some on to see what fits your hands best
Bare in mind they are made in bulk in sweat shops in the far east, they dont all come out one pefect size
So in one box you might get some that are like having flippers stuck to your hand and others that fit......like a glove
The Esab Mig gloves are pretty good as they are quite soft and flexible. Problem is the linings fall out after the fifth time they are taken off. Its rare anyone in our place has matching gloves on - Usually a Mig glove on the left hand and a Tig glove on the right. Luckily we have a left hander who uses up all the spares.
We have some heavy welding gloves for stick welding and general handling of sharp stuff.
Like all leather gloves when they get too hot they start to shrink and bend backwards giving you a 'special' hand.
Still to find a decent brand of foil covered gloves.
I use the machine mart gloves and they are fine. They do what they should though when I was welding in my roll cage I did have a glove maybe too close and the back of it caught fire but I was so they did what they should
I have welding gauntlets but rarely use them unless on heavier stuff with gasless wire. I find the cheap and cheerful £1-shop leather gloves more flexible and nicer to use. Just don't use them to pick up anything really hot!
LOL yeah, it will end up looking like a claw! or they will shrink so much you can't even get them off anymore!
We don't have any lefty's in the plant at the mo....which leaves us with a big stack of right gloves!
it seems i can use both hands for welding ! normally a leftie but many things i can use both hands. new gloves are gelling softer, well except the burnt bits that are getting harder.
its not as hard as i thought to weld with the big gloves on once you get used to it...
cheers for the advice.
