Glass supplier/merchant wanted

If anyone knows of anyone or where i can get a few prices for a sheet of glass to these dimensions please tell, i am having difficulty with this. I have been to Pilkingtons who i would of thought be the place to go but all they did was put me onto somewhere else who cant hep either, i have emailed a few folk but no reply as yet.

I need a single sheet of 100 inch x 30 inch and 15mm-18mm thick plate glass/laminated. its for a fish tank

Try Carlisle glass they have cut some very difficult shapes for me in past

We use CT Glass in Bradford. Not really local to you but they will be able to do the job.

Your problem is the thickness, your average glass merchants won't stock it that thick,Pilks [nippon] generally only make & sell stock, not cut sizes ,they got rid of all the glass companies they owned about 16 yrs ago to concentrate on ''making & selling glass'' & no added value work,everyone was finished who worked for them, we used to stock thick plate to supply the shipping industry in the north east,alas now all gone.

Not heard of 14mm laminated it usually ends in .4 or.5 if it's [say] 6.4 it will be 2x3mm with an interlayer of 0.4 pvb & classed as a safety glass, if it ends in.5 then it's an anti-bandit glass as the interlayers 1.5 thick, all can be cut with standard glass cutters or a ''lam chop'' bench, but anything with more than 2 layers of glass has to be cut with a diamond saw. toughened is just one of the standard thickness of glass which is toughened after cutting to size.

I was rounding down. 14.4mm to be precise.

Rarely use laminated these days. Around twice the price of toughened.

Point taken, you're right, lammy is more expensive, toughened is approx 5 times harder to break but turns to ''sugar'' when pierced where as lammy holds it's integrity when broken & is a safer glass for overhead work or windscreens where toughened would fall all over the place.

I use cwmtillery glass in newport[gwent],v.reasonable,will cut odd shaped & colours,just wrap it well in hardboard .!

glass merchants wont be much help with that thickness.... as you are in manchester 2 people who may be able to help are giles at barlows aquatics or steve punchard at aquascope both are up blackburn way.... & both make big tanks

have a talk to some shop fitters always used to make tanks with 1/2 plate glass from a shop fitters in Leeds now long gone plenty of broken bits for 3 ft tanks
with the length of tank you are making i would advise bracing front to back as well as on the top for the tank hood full length a lot of water in that tank
hope you will make a strong stand for it

I actualy call Steve P at aquscope yesterrday and a few other places, but as it is the time of the yaer most are closed so cant bet prices. I did get a few though rough ones and one fixed, Steve P gave me around £500 for the 16mm but Nick at ND aquatics gave me it at a nudge over £188, seems way to cheap so i am going to double check that, i will wait until new year and try the places you guys have come up with and go from there. I mite yet even get away with 12mm yet, but as its holding 450 gallon of water in the house its peace of mind for me to go that bit more on the safety factor.

Oh and it will be having a concrete block base with 4"x2"x1/4" box steel frame on top, so will be plenty strong enough, and the tank will be of 18mm WBP ply braced on the outside with 25mmx10mmx1.6mm box mild steel, inside 4 laminations of 350grm woven with poly resin, epoxy is way to expensive, then a coat of pond paint in black.

supplier local to me about £200 for 15mm and double it for 19mm i would use 19mm with your stand is it on a wood floor or concrete if wood with joists make sure your stand sits on the joists 450 gallons is over two tons of water also adds a lot to electric bill

Its definatley heavey weight mate, i checked the Nd aquactics price and its correct at £188+£30 delivery. 15mm is plenty i reckon, and i doubled checked with a tank manufacturer, they would build it with 12mm all around, but double base. Its going to be 9foot x 3foot x 34 inch high. Its will be sat on a floating conrete floor, the wooden floors in this house are feeble at 4x2 beams, i had a 6x2x2 tank in the front room which wasnt a good idea, even with acro`s under the beams.
The tank will be fully insulated/lined with 25mm kingspan or similar, also the removable top and filter room, this will help a bit with the elecy bill on the heaters. I worked out around £6pw extra in elecy.
Be good to see what my next tank will be like to run, this is a growing on tank and then the fish will be going into a 10x7x3, then the smaller of the two will be my wifes community tank.

just keep a couple of Oscars in they will grow to the tank i used to have two in a 6ft by 2ft x 2ft tank only other thing that could live in there was a big plecostomus in two years the Oscars not far short of a foot each hand fed
but they went to the pet shop
when i sold up at the time i reckoned on £45 a qtr on the electric bill and that a lot of years ago i still like to go visit the fish shop just for a look round

Arowana, i would love a Asain red but i will more likley stay with a Silver as i love Stingrays, i will be looking out for 2 young Leopoldi when its up and running, depends how deep my pockets are with prices then. Peacock Bass, i just love them, aswell as flagtails , these will be the main ones and i will have some small fish like tetras etc just to keep the rays fit lol
I would love a TSNxRTC but as you mite know they grow to daft size and need a massive tank alone.

Oh thats unless SWMBO get me to stick with the small community fish and i build the big one for my fish
