glass fibre roof

had our flat roof done about 20 odd years ago.marine ply etc/f-glass resin etc.
it was painted over with grey paint.
now not sure what paint was used but this was put on to protect the roof from the sun/weather.
any idea what they have used? is it just an ordinary household grey paint or is special for the roof.
all guttering is done now ,very pleased.
the guys said that the roof could do with a good clean and recoated at the cost of £300.
two flat roofs roughly about 4/5 ft wide and about 15/20 ft long.
he muttered (well it sound like to me as I was looking at the guttering) £200 for materials and £100 labour. something not quite right.
anyway as stated above what is it they might use paint wise.(I may do it myself?)

Epoxy would be good too but would chalk up over time.

10kgs of polyester roofing resin is c.£50 (fiberglassdirect, leeds)
you can colour it with artists oil paint (about 2% by weight iif you use windsor + newton from the range or hobbycraft)



pressure wash the roof, mix the resin, pour and spread?
I'm guessing this bit!

dont know if this is right but bloke said to me you need to sand it first before reapplying ?

yes please sand it first as it makes a gripper coat for the next paint to go onto it

The flat roof that I had fibre glassed in the past was covered with a white reflective gravel . Every now and again we would give it a gentle rake over. It was still good at 25 years when I sold the premises.

Needs a good sanding and a solvent clean before another top coat or Gell coat and must be bone dry...don't go too thick with the top coat as less is more and stops it cracking

I've had five grip roof fail recently ,
Hair line cracks in weird places , no consistency to them ,
There through the top coat into the base ,
I've had to recoat the base and top ,
You must wipe the top coat down with acetone to remove the wax coat then sand down to provide a key ,

Fibreglass roof was almost certainly (or should have been) coated with Flow coat, this is ordinary polyester gelcoat to which wax in styrene additive has been mixed in. The wax in styrene excludes air from the surface during cure allowing the gelcoat to cure with a hard glossy surface.
Flow coat can be bought from any GRP suppliers, A 20 Kg drum is approx £110 & will cover a big area.
If you need to recoat a good clean & sand will be required.

^^^ A nice good sand to clean and freshen the top layer, otherwise when the new FLOWCOTE and it is flowcote that is applied, it will lift off the substraight. The best way to apply the flowcote is to spray it on with a 'laminating gun, kit thing'. Those that have worked with GRP will know what I mean. It is the airless spraying of resin, gelcote and flowcote. Generally flowcote is too thick to spray so what I use is modified gelcote. They, the supplier just adds wax and styrene so it cures smooth and non sticky. Gelcote has the better consistancy for spraying as opposed to general flowcote. You can also get sprayable flowcote, but not avaliable from all suppliers. Hope this helps
