I tried using paint stripper and acid removal gel to clean up my axles for painting. I didn't want to blast them as I didn't want the abrasive media getting in through the seals or anything. My diffs have expensive lockers inside!
Started using the paint stripper, so far so good:

A trial of the Deox Gel, looked good at first, removed quite a layer.

Cling filmed it and left over night:

Kind of looked like it would get there, looking clean, but the nooks and crannies still had muck that wouldn't come off, baked on grease, thicker rust that the acid needs more goes to remove.

So after wasting the most part of a day, decided to take the risk and blast the parts. Nothing beats blasting (not the same part, but done in same batch).

This is how I sealed the seals... the yellowed stuff is seam sealer (it yellowed during blasting). It was a pain getting the sealant off afterwards, but kept the media well away and blasting has given much better result and much quicker.

My next restoration project will go much quicker, I know what works and what doesn't now!
