Anyone tell me what type of paint is used on the girders of steel framed buildings like office blocks, skyscrapers etc ?

A lot of the bigger structural stuff we do is Epoxy, think its Epilife or Epigrip.

But depends really, some might just be basic red/grey oxide primer, others intumescent paints....

All the structural steel work i do is normally just red oxide if its hidden behind stud walls/ plaster etc. hope that helps.

yes i agree red oxide is all i've used unless they want to paint it with some fire rated paint (Not sure what its called but its really thick goes on like artex)

Cheer - looks like good quality red oxide - unless I can "arrange" some red lead

I'm CONSIDERING using pallet racking to build a new workshop. My land slopes so the idea that is brewing is having it two storey with a basement storage area hence wanting some decent paint for the metalwork.

This is the paint you want! they use it on the oil rig platforms as well, so it is severely tested against the elements of salt erosion, slightly more than what you would expect to have on the roads?.

I blast and paint a lot of structural steelwork and I would suggest a decent zinc phosphate primer to keep back the rust followed by a single pack alkyd quick drying top coat to seal the primer and give you a good hard finish. If fire resistance is required you will need to go for an intumescent coating which will give you a fire rating of upto 3 hours (only usually required in blocks of flats/apartments where the steel work is behind stud walling). You can get the paint from most decent suppliers like leighs, cromadex, international etc

Zinc phosphate primer tends to be pretty standard with top coat to spec, again fast drying is preferable, I pay circa £22 a gallon ex VAT, Most of the so called red oxides are simply enamel based paints, there not great and do take forever to harden properly.

Red oxide or dark grey primer at work we use leigh paints.
