I’ve been put off-ex for a week or two (as soon as the sun comes out, perfect timing), so decided to do a small job and get my diesel Fergy running again.
The engine ran away on me out of nowhere last year (kept revving until it nearly wrecked itself), luckily it stopped when I cut the diesel supply.
It’s been in the family since new, or at least parts of it have. It’s more like the Ship of Theseus now; I’m not sure what parts are left of the original tractor my great grandad bought in the 50s…
It was painted in the 70s or 80s with the finest floor paint, and some extra decoration.
I'm going to try and get it running again and back to work for the summer - it needs other jobs doing but don't want it to start turning into a long term project.
I suspected the diapragm in the diesel pump had torn, so set to work removing the pump.
I also watched Bundy Bear's comprehensive youtube video on rebuilding the pump, so hope to know what to expect when it all comes apart.
Bought a new diapragm and a full pump seal kit, as well as diesel filters, etc.
Marked up lines and drained pump:
Bonnet, fuel tank and rocker cover off to make some more room and find top dead centre (didn't think this would be neccessary but did it just in case - lucky as it turned out to be very neccessary!)
Locking pin installed in the flywheel to hold it in place:
Rocker shaft and valve gear all looking good. Will check valve clearances later if I get time.
Unfortunately one of the collars that pushes the valve down on the decompression shaft was broken. It's not important so I'll just leave it off.
Better than it breaking completely and rattling around with the rockers and valve springs:
Diesel pump off, and looking a bit grotty:
Gave the shaft a turn to see if everything moved, and immediately realised I'd now have to know what position to put it back to in order to reinstall it.
Would have been almost impossible to find if I hadn't set the engine to TDC! (Could have gone and TDCed the engine at this point anyway - but it saved me a panic!)
Filters off, showing it needed a good clean anyway:
Took the throttle housing off and apart, one problem found already:
The throttle plunger (that's actuated by the throttle lever and pushes against the diapragm), on the right in the pic, was stuck nearly at wide open throttle.
Gave it a clean to see if I could persuade it to come out, and in my infinite wisdom pushed it all the way in, so now couldn't get any tools on it.
The throttle lever pushes the plunger, which pushes a pin, which pushes the diapragm, which pushes the fuelling rack. There is a spring sitting between the plunger and the pin, and the spring tension wasn't enough to push the assembly out from the pin side.
Chucked it back in the parts washer to let it soak over lunch...
