g'day guys , got my new mig out of the box and can't put on the torch lead properly as the steel liner protrudes too far out and hits the feed wheels, shall i just cut off excess with a pair of wire cutters. is this normal procedure , i have instruction book but its pretty poor . ( uni-mig 172 )

Mick, check how far the liner protrudes at the business end. It might be that the liner is the right length, but needs moving an inch or two.
Otherwise, the wire cutters are fine, but make sure you don't leave a sharp edge to snag the mig wire.
BTW, replacement wire liners are normally oversize and need cutting down.

The Liner should be just behind the copper contact tip. If it's still too long at the feed roller end cut it with some good wire cutters/tin snips so it's almost touching the feed rollers.
Make sure the torch lead is laid out straight to take up any 'play'
