getting new toy

just bought a southbend 9" model c lathe.
guy is delivering it next week if he can get trailer.

Nice! I have a southbend lathe very nice machine indeed, mine was used toward the end of ww2 to make rifle barrels and still has a plate with 'property of the war department' on it, I bet it could tell some tails!!

Not jealous at all (well, not much)! Well done, a cracking lathe - always regret having to give my 9" away when I moved to a new job 150 miles away & couldn't sort storage while in short term rental. At least it's still in use with the chap I gave it to...

That's a good price! mine had a wooden bench under it, I am in the process of making a new stand for it with a swarf tray. And I bought a new motor and controller for it too, the main lathe is still together so if you want some pics I will certainly post some for you!

Sweet little lathes! My wife's grandad had one in nice condition in their garage in Canada. It was sitting for years as he had passed away. When they sold up the belongings at auction this year the lathe fetched $90 CAD. Needless to say that saddened me.

it's got cast iron stand ( think it's cast iron ) and what looked like swarf tray.
said there is 3/4hp motor with it.

I used to have a south bend, my first lathe. Had a screw cutting box and cross feed, painted blue when I sold it off, must have some pictures somewhere.

I think the Smart & Brown Sables were all a lurid blue originally, mine now sports a beautiful silver hammerite paint job that looks as if it's been applied with the yard broom!

got another box of bits dropped off today.
lathe is coming end of month.

tha 4 jaw independant is a pratt bernard, big 3 jaw as a plate saying taylor made in england.
and little chuck is stamped thedurneed from what i can make out.
and also got back cover.

I have the big brother of that Taylor chuck, they are built like a tank proper old British engineering!

hate to think how much yours weighs that 6" is heavy enough.

It's a lump and a half, unfortunately my lathe is about the same size as yours so it's not the most useful thing I own!
