Getting better, but

Not that good but i am getting there with my Tig welding, been practicing again for a few hours. These will be my bow and hand rails, so 3mm feet and 1.6mm tube, not easy with the different thickness. I keep blowing holes in the tube but i manage to fill them and now i dont go so slow and high.



I pickled them and a quick buff on the grinder/buffer.

How do i stop messing the edges up ?

Slightly wider plate, i assume your stashions are going to sit inside these. Or are these just practice.

If it were me id cut all the feet and drill first. If these are mounting points you could use smaller to go inside the stansion. Dont forget large backing plates to, these may end up taking a fair bit of weight.

That plate is plenty wide enough to get across there without a spill.
It's just heat build up where the material is less.
Your arc length is way too long which is why your covering such a wide area and also why the whole run is under cutting at the top.
Get the tungsten nice and tight into the corner. Grind it up into a nice sharp narrow point and you'll see it can be so much better focused. An over hang on the plate of half that amount will be a doddle when you get that arc more focused.

These are just practice off cuts, i have the rails and feet made all drilled etc to be welded up. I have some 4x2x1 hardwood blocks to block out inside, will be bolted through.

I spend more time sharpening tungsten lol, more picky on that than welding lol. I will get closer then, i need to try and steady my hand a bit more i guess, not darn easy, i couldnt be an electrician lol.

Anyway todays attempts, i got the tungsten closer so a smaller nice weld when i got the run going. Still with 1.6 tunsten, 1.2mm filler and 60amps with 1.5 pre and 4.5 post.



chuffed even more now. Still need to sort the spill on the edge. one step at a time

Think wot I do is:

do a dry run to check my angle and stick out

light up on the base plate away from the tube joint

Puddle up on the base plate, then walk the arc up to the tube and be ready to put the filler in quick
back up favouring the arc on the base plate (be careful not to touch in to the puddle)
Push the puddle and wash up onto the tube and dab in filler
stop and turn the piece round and start again rather than going too far "round the corner"
When you have done the first bit, you may want to turn the amps down a tad and/or use next size up filler.

Watching the arc is the key for me, try this:

Put your thumbs up on both hands. (assuming you are right handed)

Get your right thumb in focus and keep it in focus-thats the arc.

Now turn your left thumb up to the horizontal and bring it across to the joint of your right thumb, keeping your focus on your right thumb, thats your filler coming in.

I find if you take your eye off the arc and puddle, you lose control.

You may find you have to make small movements with the torch so don't grip it too tightly

On small pieces like that, I find you have to speed up as the job heats up, so just stop, reposition the piece and let things cool down.
