Good Morning,
New to the forums, and I have recently decided to get back into welding. My dad was a welder between Engineering jobs and I learned to weld back in the mid-80's from him and school on his old Lincoln "buzz" box, which I used the same machines at the HS. I haven't welded anything since then, but thought I would get back into it and try my hand at mig welding. I used to program 2 CNC Cincinnati lasers in a fab shop so I'm no stranger to metal.
Question I am having is a familiar one... "What welder is best for my application?"
I'm obviously just going to be a hobiest. I know I want a welder that runs off of 220. I have been looking at the Lincoln 180 duals, right now there is a rebate. I think I can get one for right around $1k with choosing an extended 5 year warranty. Something I could just charge, and pay off in 6 mo. same as cash.
I came across a nice looking Miller DVI yesterday (Not DVI2) This welder is in excellent shape with very low hours, but they are asking $1200 cash. Selling point was longer power cable and a cart. The cart looks to be what the welder came with.
So really, to me there is nothing extra about the machine besides the extra length of the power cable, which is minor since I could just make/buy one for around $80+.
Anyways... that's my rant. I'm really looking forward to getting back into welding. I have a few projects I can't wait to start dabbling with. Shop table, small tow trailer, but the main reason was to build a new stand for our 200 gallon salt water aquarium. Figured I can lay it out in cad, do the welding myself. Why pay someone when I could buy the tools and do it myself! haha.
