thinking of buying a small 2kW genny to keep in the van. there have been a few times when one would have been handy so makes sense to get one soon.

anyway, ive been looking at a few that I like and most of them have 1x110V 16amp output and 1x240V 16amp output (some have a 12V output too

question is, can I use both 110 and 240V sockets at the same time providing I do not exceed the Wattage rating of the genny?

for instance a 1000W 240V power saw and a 500W 110V work light?

the reason I am thinking of this is I have a few 110V lights that I use from a transformer, but all of my corded tools are 240V

the honda generator i have has a changeover switch its either one or the other so if your wanting both just plug a 110 transformer in to the 240v twin socket and u have both providing u dont overload it

On any of the smaller generators i have owned or used it's always been one or the other I'm afraid

thanks, I have just found that svrewfix are having a sale on the 240V version of the lights I have, 10 quid a hit, so I think I will just buy 2 of those, make up a good sized extension lead with commando plugs on it and buy the genny I have been looking at.

its 165 quid, 4 stroke with a 15L tank, 2kW constant and 2.4kW max with a 12 hour run time at 100%. for what I need it is perfect I can run 2 lights, and each of my corded tools and still be 200w below the 2k

some gennys will dual output properly , they are usally expensive. if you need full power dual output ( full power on say 110v then 230v but not both at teh same time ) transformer is usally the easyest and cheepest way.

some genorators now seem to have one of the two 110v windings perantly connected to the 110v plug so they will dual output in a limuted way very convinent on low loads but try run any power and the one winding will just trip the breacker

Just a thought are dual voltage 240/110v gennies 110v output 55-0-55 I doubt it, I would think they are 0-110V, so not actually as safe as tranny based 110v ?, then the 240v output, would be 110-0-110? I have a 110 three phase one but is actually 55-55-55

duel voltage have 2 110 windings run in parallel to give the higher amperage then in series for 220 volts

yup your right most 110v outputs are 110v - 0. and the 220v ones arre 110 - 0 - 110

one of the welder genorators i have dose 55-0-55 110v the 220 v is also 220v-0 as it has dedicated windings for each output so gives true dual outputs.

not met 110v three phase yet tho, what do you use that for out of intrest ?

I dont use it, I got coz it was lpg powered but I believe it was ex BT for running pumps to empty their holes in the ground, I presume to give higher starting torque and therefore a smaller generator actual size but the biggest pump but you can run 110 off two phases. I put the feelers out for a small 3ph genny just in case the power went in the garage and we needed to get a car off a lift and that turned up very cheap I thought if I couldnt use it i could use the gas carb. I did use it with 3 110 trannies backwards a bit of a cock up but it worked. the engine stood the load to run the motor.
