Generator Wiring

Hi Folks,

Need a bit of advice with a generator that I have acquired.

It currently outputs 120v and I need to rewire it to output 240v

If its any help its a Meccalte SW15 alternator.

Would I be correct in that White and Yellow (3 and 2) need to be joined together? Then use 1 and ground and 4 and ground?

This is a single phase generator.

What does your voltmeter say ?

Apparently 3 and 2 are already joined together.

This is how its currently wired.
Yellow and green both connected to Neutral.
White and Red both connected to Live

It does on the alternator housing. This is the exact model.

Good.

Bridge 3 and 2 and see if it gives you 230 volts.

But from the first post they seem to be already bridged.

Yes.

Which wire would you normally use as neutral in this setup? I'm assuming Red.

Green would be connected to the breaker switch according to the diagram

Green would have to be L1 as the protection is in the line, Red would be N and needs to be earthed.
2& 3 joined. (120V AC + 120V AC) if the schematic is correct.

It might well be a CTE alternator (centre tap to Earth).... and (like Safety Transformers) what you have is two nominal 55v windings, where the potential of either end is 110v.
I.e. it's max output is 110v nominal (more like 120v in reality at 52hz).

To be allowed on construction sites gennys not only have to be 110v - but the voltage-earth has to be 55v, not 110v - hence the 55v volt windings (like the 110v transformers are).

You may well find that you cannot get 230v out of it without changing the whole alternator to one with 2 of 115v windings.
