Generator Problem - Stormforce KDE6000T3

Father in Law gave me a generator to have a look at.
It was initially a 3phase generator but he converted it to single phase. I don't know how.

It is a Stormforce KDE 6000T3 Diesel Generator. He says all it needs is a new voltage regulator to allow it to work properly. It starts and runs but I assume it isn't regulating voltage as it should so couldn't be used to run anything.

Could someone advise on what I need to get it running correctly. Few pics in the next post.

3rd and 4th pics are of the regulator that was on it. I am not sure if that was the original or not.

My little gennie that the voltage was bouncing up and down on just needed a new capacitor.

That's an avr, they do fail and output stops, has it had the alternator changed or just wired differently, check it out before fitting a new one just in case

Check the windings before you buy another AVR, if you have been putting all the load on one phase it may have burnt out.

Il have to investigate further with the FIL as I know very little about it.

Could either of you lads point me in the direction of the correct AVR for this application?
On the assumption that the other things check out ok.

Unless you can put the part number in and it brings one up you'll probably need to know what make the alternator is, could be the same as the kipor brand as the have the same KDE model prefix, I changed the alternator on the one I had

there are meny copy avr most will say works for x mechine but do cheak the sizes the need to mm perfect as most fit inside the end plate near the motor

from memory you can cheak if its working by adding a car battery to some terminals near the brushes and starting the engine please do a bit of research on this but it was the way i proved mine is working before buying the avr

it only shows half the output volts but proves its working

Ive not actually tested to see if there is no output. Is it the case that if the AVR is dead that there will be no power or could it be unregulated power?

On mine when the avr goes theres no power output but engine runs

As its components it could be erratic? Some one here might confirm that more @HughF is good with electicics components

Generic chinese '6kVa diesel generator' AVR - these are actually quite good machines when they work. We had one that would easily start a 2hp compressor motor. Shame the fake Yanmar 186 was a bit junk and the camshaft bearing failed - still, that was an easy fix too.

Do I just pick any "Generic chinese '6kVa diesel generator' AVR" with the correct nr of wires and hope for the best?
Does the fact its been converted from 3phase to single affect which AVR I need?

The only way he would have converted it was run one phase and neutral to the blue socket - unless he's got loads of time on his hands and he's changed the alternator.

I would say that yes, any "Generic chinese '6kVa diesel generator' AVR" with the correct nr of wires" will work, and it's exactly what I would do, and I rebuild and repair many generators,.

One thing you will need to take note of is the output will only be a 3rd of the stated wattage if it still has the 3 phase alternator fitted, so in reality it's a bit uneconomical only using it for single phase

Better than nothing though which is the alternative!

I might need it in the coming months when the power is turned off
