Generator/ honda 6.5

anyone know anything about Honda engines. I let it run dry every year of petrol and when I get a power cut I put fresh fuel in. Runs for about thirty seconds and stops, starts and continuously does this. took the bowl off etc but still the same. Backfires just before it stops.
Any help greatly appreciated

Filter gummed up? The backfire could be lean mix as the bown empties.

usually on those engines the main jet becomes fouled remove the fuel bowl and clean it

Sounds stupid but check the oil level they have a safety cut out for low oil level

yeah some even have overheat protection on the cylinder

but if it backfires it suggests that the ignition has not been cut which is what both of the above do

also clean the pre filter it's in the tank , usally have to unscrew the fuel tap to pull it out and give it a clean, if left with no fuel in the tanks sometimes rust inside and that clogs the filter
