So, it's arrived (please don't laugh too much ). As this is very much a 'hobby' item, and I don't have a whole lot of cash to splash, I though that this unit may do what I need, for now. I have three tasks that I plan to tackle (more on that, as and when I need help with them).

I have already ordered a pack of 10x M6 MB15 MIG Welding Contact Tips (0.8mm) as well as the wire to go with that. Although the Welder did come with 500gms of wire, it's 1.0mm and, from what I've learned so far (but please correct me if I'm wrong) I understand that 0.8mm is considered to be a good general purpose choice. I've checked the machine, and the feed wheel thing(?) is double-sided, 1.0mm & 0.8mm.

Does anyone have any general thoughts?

The cost? Well, at £50, it's not going to break the bank; a few years back, I understand that Amazon (not that I use their services, but a friend of mine does) had this unit up at more than £200.00, not that that's any kind of indication as to the quality, but I do feel kind of good that I paid just 1/4 of that.

where does the wire feed out from?, where does the mig torch connect?

Looking on ebay it seems the MIG torch connects through one of the dinse connectors, still interested to see what the ports are like.

Cant knock that for £50 if it does what you need it to do.

I would doubt that little box put's out 270 amps.

I'm sure that data plate is a work of fiction, I would expect 120amps max output at maybe 50% duty cycle like other welders of it's size. Try and make it do too much for too long it probably won't last.

Weld at the max settings, should penetrate a 5mm plate if it's 270amps, let us know how you get on.

As I like to tinker I'm tempted for £50, add a valved torch, flylead and a dinze socket to change polarity to make it a gas mig welder. I could pull the transformer out of my Clarke 150 with modified wirefeed, infinitely variable voltage would be really nice.

I'm skeptical as well, but I figure if it puts out 200 amps with a 60% duty cycle, then it should do what I need it to do. I can only show what the spec plate is showing, but I've no way of knowing how accurate that is.

I know how to test things such as an electric motor, or a lamp, or a heater; that's very easy to do.

As others have said, there is no chance whatsoever that a box of that small size and weighing less than 5kg could support an output of anything close to 270 Amps. The numbers on the dataplate would mean 270 x 27.5 = 7.4kW output, and so about 35 to 40 Amps going through the single bridge rectifier on the AC mains input side...! It may comfortably manage 120 Amps, but not much more.

Regarding your order for 0.8mm tips and wire - that would be flux-core? This machine has no provision for using gas.

Yes, it is indeed gasless-only, and therefore DCEN.
No easy way to change that, since this welder is one of those weird new ones which have a non-Euro detachable torch that feeds wire via a hollow Dinse plug, and that Dinse socket is negative on the front panel.

Yes, thank you; it is: HITBOX Flux Cored 1kg 0.8mm Gasless Mig Welding Wires Flux Cored Welder Wire, which I believe is what I need.

Although it's possible to open up the unit without too much trouble, I can't see what the ratings are on the Power Transistors, as the Heat Sinks cover the info, but maybe this pic will give you all a little more to go on.
