gear box jack

so do I purchase this, or do I make something up? I need to change the clutch on my pick up and after doing one last year and having it fall off a tranie jack i borrowed I dont want it happening again. Any bright ideas greatly received. Lee

ive got something similar , it just gets in the way and doesnt help much at all

stick with a decent trolley jack and a ratchet strap

It depends on type of truck. If HGV or 4x4 then I'd say buy one as cheaper than dropping on your foot However if normal Transit etc sized then make something.

it is a 4x4 and the gearbox and transffer box have to come out attached it is a lump and very unbalanced, I think I will make something up out of wood though and ratchet strap it to that

I made a gadget about twenty years ago that bolts to the transferbox/gearbox on Range/landrovers. Messed about on the floor with one to find the center of balance and then went to the nearest substantial bolt holes with the bracket, works really well and makes clutch/gearbox changes a doddle , can do these on my own with no grief whatsoever. If you dont have access to a ramp it can be easier on some of these 4x4`s to jack the back of the truck as high as possible rather than the front.

last time I did a geabox change, just used a ratchet strap and a couple of bits of timber to "lash" the trolley jack support to the the box, while I dropped it.. pretty sure at the time I thought ball ox, I need to make something better, but 10 years on... still got a ratchet strap though...

that looks nice, I have 4 drive on ramps never thought about just lifting the back up though might have to have a look

I agree with 8ob, make something up and try to get the centre of gravity or as near as possible and make the brackets adjustable and bolt them to the box/tranny case.

As a safety measure you could always get a selection of wooden blocks and form them around the assembly so if it does twist and fall, it wont drop far and it will drop onto something slightly pliable, then as you lower the unit you simply remove a layer of wooden blocks, slightly more time consuming but much cheaper that replacing an assembly.

On my other L200 I lost the box of the jack and had to get the engine crane to pick it back up and get it into place total nightmare

Ive been umming and arring about that draper one for years and years. Would make clutch / gearbox changes much easier for me, but I always cheap out when I come to doing the work

they aint that expensive £40 odd it dont have wheels but i have a nice set of wheels anyway.

I realise you've done the job now but what about the platform the Bad Obsession Motorsport guys have made out of a bunch of scissor jacks and some cam belts to link them all together ?
