Gates Restoration

My parents have just moved into a bungalow opposite and the front garden/drive gates are looking a bit tired. Although structurally sound paint has flaked off in quite a few places and surface rust has taken hold. Can someone please advise a step by step and what products to use to restore them to pristine condition. I DONT have access to any 'blasting' equipment and dont have the funds to have them galvd after cleaning them before painting - Thanks in advance Mark

Hi Mark, they should clean up quite well with wire brush on a grinder, flap disc, power file etc whatever you have available and can use to get into all of the nooks and crannies to remove all of the loose rust, paint etc and clean them back to sound metal. Ideally you would then need to use a rust converter, prime and then paint, there are lots of options on the paint but personally I would stay away from Hammerite, a good metal primer, undercoat and household gloss paint is as good as anything or QD90 Metal paint, Rustoleum, etc the list goes on. By the time you take into account the cost of the materials and the amount of time and labour involved in cleaning them up It may be worth getting a couple of quotes to have them powdercoated as they are blasted as part of that process and It may work out more cost effective to go down that route, hope thats of some help
