Gate hinges

Hi,

Im posting pics of my gate hinges as promised.
I used argon mix gas set at 10 on dial.
Potamig 185 power set at 2.4
Cleats are 10mm thick.
Dowels are 20mm thick.
I placed the parts to be welded onto an earthed steel plate and used a magnet for the 90 deg angle between the cleat and dowel then welded at the base of the dowel with the dowel inset about 1.5mm into the cleat.

It will hold

I would probably set the round bar in a touch more - 3-4mm or so, and run the weld a bit hotter than you have, run round the outside of the hole, making sure the wire points right into the bottom edges of the hole, run the weld round, then pause in the middle to fill the centre. If its nice and hot it will form one solid pool in the centre.

Agree totally with Welderpaul, however..well done, looks like you are getting the hang of that great machine.

If you are now welding that to a support, up your power to 2/5 or even at full 2/6

Hinges

Well,

Iv'e done all four hinges now and welded them onto the post.

I hit one with a club hammer several times then broke the handle of the hammer..........i guess a good weld.

Or a rotten handle

They'll be allright

Like the others, i weld round the edge, then back into the centre to fill the gap.
Also a neatness thing as well as a little bit more strength.

Funny you should say that.

Though its not a club hammer like the one i broke, i have repaired an old toffee hammer that had the head snap off.

I used a bolt and a peice of thread to extend the bolt and welded the combination to the old head, iv'e used it a few times and it still in one piece....lol

Back to hinge talk,

I'll post a new thread with my hammer handle next comments welcome.

Right....In the pics i first posted you can see the dowel that has been welded shows discolouration (blue colour) is this a bad sign of too much heat?
