gassless mig to gas conversion

Right here we go I had a old maypole gas mig that after meny years of service has now died. It had a euro torch conversion new solinoid valve.
I have got hold of a small gasless mig only 90a and would like to convert it using bits from my old one to gas.
I have read on here that I will need to reverse the polarity but why?
Also the gasless welder does not seem to have a rectifier so will I need to conect one up.
I do have some electrical knowledge and also have time on my hands.
As parts from the old welder are avalible I would like to try it any one done simular

You'd be better off fixing the Maypole.

A gasless AC MIG is just cheap, all but useless. You'd have to move the control board, rectifier, reactor to the 90A one. Then figure out how to run gas to the torch.

As you would need to take everything except the transformer from the Maypole, you would probably still have the same problems.

Its the transformer that has died on the maypole.

Why not take the transformer from the gasless one and fit it into the Maypole?
